On Tuesday 10th of May, Sunsilk and Coles collaborated to stage the event "Aisle Avant Garde": a fashion show inside the Coles supermarket at Waterloo, using exclusively designed pieces by up-and-coming UTS student fashion designers. Excitingly, we knew one of these designers- the wonderful Kacey Devlin of our design and production team.
As a springboard for her Sunsilk design, Kacey staged an enquiry into the movement of hair through a series of observational films. Comprising two interlocking and interchangeable jackets, playfully layered over original- digitally printed undergarments, Kacey's look focused on movement and the body's interaction with its garments.
When we asked about her design, Kacey said she usually worked with a more neutral colour palette but saw the Sunsilk competition as "a unique and exciting opportunity to experiment with colour". Hand-dying her silk-wool blend Jacket in a poppy-Aqua hue, Devlin was inspired by leading hair expert Teddy Charles’ SunSilk Co-Creations Frizz Control with Aloe Vera Nutri Serum. For her second jacket, Devlin used the observational films to graph her subjects hair and its movement within the SunSilk logo; this resulted in a beautifully hand-illustrated, contemporary digital print in charcoal tones.
Unfortunately Kacey didn't walk away with the $3K prize money- that was awarded to Caitlin Davies-Forsyth; however she did stay true to her original design philosophy- with quality, transformation and an underlying sense of individuality at the forefront... and for that, the ioco team is extra proud!
